Guidelines for Submission

Style and Format Guidelines for Ukwuru Science Submissions

File Format

Manuscript files must be in one of the following formats: DOC, DOCX, or RTF. Microsoft Word documents should not be locked or protected.

If using LaTeX, submit your manuscript as a PDF. Refer to the LaTeX submission guidelines for more information.

Length

There are no specific limitations on word count, the number of figures, or the amount of supporting information. Manuscripts can be any length. However, we encourage concise presentation and discussion of findings.

Font

Use a standard font size and any typical font, except for “Symbol.” For symbols, use the Insert → Symbol function in your word processor or insert the appropriate Unicode character.

Headings

Limit sections and subsections to three heading levels. Ensure that the different levels of headings are clearly indicated in the manuscript.

Layout and Spacing

The manuscript should be double-spaced and formatted in a single column. Avoid multiple column layouts.

Page and Line Numbers

Include both page numbers and continuous line numbers in your manuscript. The line numbering should not restart on each page.

Footnotes

Footnotes are not allowed. Move any footnotes into the main text or reference list, depending on the content.

Language

Manuscripts must be written in English. If you wish, you may include translations of the manuscript or abstract as supporting information. Please review the guidelines for supporting information.

Abbreviations

Define all abbreviations the first time they are used in the text. Avoid using non-standard abbreviations unless they appear at least three times in the manuscript. Keep abbreviations to a minimum.

Reference Style

Ukwuru Science follows the “APA” reference style as outlined by the APA. See the reference formatting examples and instructions provided below.

Equations

For equations, we recommend using MathType for the best results. Alternatively, you can use the Equation Editor or Microsoft Word’s Insert → Equation function.

  • Avoid using these tools for individual symbols, such as Greek letters or variables; insert them as standard text using the correct Unicode values.

  • Ensure that the entire equation is created using the same tool; do not mix different equation formats within the same equation.

Nomenclature

Use the appropriate, established nomenclature wherever possible.

  • Units of measurement: Use SI units, providing the SI value in parentheses if another unit is used.

  • Drugs: Use the Recommended International Non-Proprietary Name (rINN).

  • Species names: Write in italics (e.g., Homo sapiens). Write the full genus and species names the first time they are mentioned, and use the abbreviated form afterward (e.g., H. sapiens).

  • Genes, mutations, and alleles: Write in italics and use the recommended nomenclature from a relevant database (e.g., HGNC for human genes). Show gene prefixes in roman typeface (e.g., v-fes, c-MYC).

  • Allergens: For manuscripts involving allergenic proteins, use the systematic nomenclature approved by the WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Sub-Committee.

Copyediting

If you believe your manuscript would benefit from professional editing, consider using language-editing or copyediting services before submission. This is the responsibility of the author. Submissions that do not meet the journal's language standards may be rejected.

Viewing Figures and Supporting Information in the Compiled Submission PDF

The compiled submission PDF will include low-resolution previews of your figures after the reference list. These previews help speed up the download process. High-resolution versions of each figure can be downloaded via the links provided at the top of each preview page. Links to Supporting Information files are also available after the reference list.
